There is a lot involved in moving, from organizing and planning to implementing everything the day of the move. And it doesn’t stop there. Once you’ve moved in, there are some important tasks left to check off.
Some tasks apply to everyone, but when you move into a rental property, there are a few special things to take into consideration. Follow these tips to make sure everything is taken care of once you move into your rental property.
Rental Property Set-Up Tips
Inspect everything
It’s important to inspect your apartment before you move in, as well as right after. Make sure nothing was damaged in the process, such as door frames, trim, walls, and flooring.
Check utilities
A good rule of thumb is to make sure your utilities are turned on at least 24 hours before you move in. Once you’re settled in, check to make sure everything is up and running properly. Turn on all the lights, stove, microwave, dishwasher, and washer and dryer, and check to make sure your cable and internet are working, as well as the thermostat.
Report any maintenance issues
If you find any issues with your rental, report them right away to your landlord. Make a list, date it, and document the maintenance issues with photos.
Locate your mailbox and trash/recycling area
If you are moving into a complex, locate important common areas like the mailbox and trash/recycling so when you’re ready to use either one, you don’t have to go searching for it first. You should also test your mailbox keys to make sure they are the correct ones.
Make copies of your keys
If you ever lose your keys, it could take a while to get new copies from your landlord. Instead, take it upon yourself to make your own copies as soon as you move in so you always have some backups if you need them.
Get renters insurance
Renters insurance is a great way to protect yourself should anything unfortunate happen while you are living in your rental, such as theft or flooding. If you already have renters insurance, be sure to update your address ASAP.
Get settled in
Once everything is taken care of, you can focus on the fun part: settling into your new place. Unpack your things (we’ve got a helpful post on how to streamline the process), clean, go grocery shopping, and perhaps even throw a housewarming party to celebrate your move and meet your neighbors.
