Follow these easy tips on finding activities in a new community so you don’t have to waste any time building your new life.
Finding Activities in a New Community
Check bulletin boards
Community bulletin boards are always filled with announcements for activities, special events, clubs, and other gatherings. You can usually find these community boards at places like coffee shops, cafes, grocery stores, city hall, and other local establishments. They are the quickest way to get ideas and find out what is going on in the community.
Look online
Of course, in this day and age, the internet is a wealth of both global and local information. It depends on the community, but most places will have some kind of digital footprint. If you know what kind of activity you are looking for, you can start by typing in your town name and the activity of interest into a Google search to see what comes up, such as “Orlando hiking groups.” Even if you can’t find a specific event or group to join, you may be able to find other information, like a local hiking gear shop, that could then point you in the right direction by reaching out to them.
Volunteer
Volunteering is a wonderful way to become a part of your community, meet people, and do some good in the process. Most communities have similar volunteer opportunities, such as volunteering at the nearest hospital, pet rescue organization, or schools. You could also search online to see what other neighborhood-specific volunteer opportunities exist in your new community.
Ask your new neighbors
Your new neighbors are a great source, too. Reach out to them to find out what kind of activities and events are going on in the community. Not everyone is involved in things, but you may get lucky and ask someone who has a great suggestion. Not only will you have an excuse to strike up a conversation with your neighbors and get to know them, but you also could find out about something you wouldn’t have known about otherwise that will open up a wonderful opportunity for you.
