Declutter first

Megans moving packing guide. Going through everything you have before you start packing and getting rid of anything you no longer want or need is a critical step in the process. Decluttering first will ensure that you don’t waste time and supplies on unnecessary items.

Label and inventory everything as you go

You may be tempted to skip the extra step of labeling your boxes and inventorying your items, but trust us when we say, it will save you a lot of time and frustration down the road! By labeling all your boxes by room, movers will be able to more quickly identify where everything goes so their job goes faster and you don’t have to worry about moving boxes around to the correct place later.

Having an inventory list will make unpacking easier, too. Need something? Just check the list and go straight to the box you need rather than rummaging through several before you find what you’re looking for.

Get the right supplies (and more than you think you’ll need)

The right supplies make any job easier to do. When it comes to moving, we recommend investing in new boxes made for moving. Not only do they fit better in the truck because they are all the same size, but they are also a lot sturdier than the free ones you find at grocery stores and the like.

It’s also important to get boxes that are the right size for your items. For some things, you may want to invest in special boxes made just for those items, such as mirrors and artwork. We offer a variety of box sizes to make sure everything is moved safely.

Other supplies you’ll want to have plenty of on hand are packing tape, packing paper, and bubble wrap. Always get more than you think you’ll need so you don’t run out halfway through packing. You can always return the excess later.

Use small boxes for heavy items

Never pack heavy items in large boxes. They’re a lot less sturdy. Pack all heavy items in smaller boxes so they are easier to handle. Also, never let a box exceed fifty pounds.

Don’t leave empty spaces in boxes

Gaps in boxes will allow for shifting during transport, which can cause damages. Always fill every available spot in a box so nothing can move around. Use packing paper, towels, blankets, and even stuffed animals to fill up empty spaces.

Be generous with tape

One layer of packing tape is usually not enough for most boxes, especially heavy ones. Apply at least two layers of packing tape on the bottom of boxes to ensure that they will hold during transport.

Take pictures of electronics and label cords

One of the most daunting parts of packing is looking at all the cords hanging out of electronics and wondering how you will ever figure out what goes where in the new home. Get rid of all that stress by taking photos of the back of your electronics and clearly labeling each cord with color-coded stickers.

Keep track of small parts

Small parts, such as hardware you remove from furniture, can get lost very easily. Put these items in baggies and either tape them to their respective pieces of furniture or keep them all in a clearly labeled box.
