The Easy Way to Inventory Your Belongings When Moving

Easy Inventory One of the most overlooked assets to having a smoother move is an easy inventory list. Inventorying your items as you pack them may sound like an extra hassle, but trust us – it’s well worth the effort.

The two huge benefits of inventorying your belongings for moving are:

  1. It makes unpacking easier because you can find exactly what you need by simply looking at your inventory list.
  2. You will be better on top of what you are moving to the new home in case anything goes missing.

Keeping an inventory of your items when packing is a lot easier than it sounds. With only a few steps, you’ll have a record of everything you are taking with you so you can avoid a lot of headache during your move.

How to Easy Inventory Your Items During a Move

Step 1: Choose Your Method

There are two ways to easy inventory your items for a move: on paper or electronically. If you prefer putting pen to paper, get a notebook or binder for the move to keep everything neat and organized in one place.

If you want to easy inventory your home digitally, you have a couple of options. One is to create a document on your computer using a simple word processor like Microsoft Word or through an online resource like Google Docs or Evernote. The second is to get an app specifically created to inventory a move. There are a few different ones on the market for varying prices, so do some research to decide which one would be best for you.

Step 2: Color Code

Assign each room in your home a color. Then, use that color packing tape or marker when you pack the boxes so you know where they belong at a glance. This will make it a lot easier for movers because they’ll be able to easily identify where they should go, which will also make unpacking a lot easier for you.

Step 3: Categorize

In your inventory list, categorize everything by room. Then, when you start a new box, write a number on it and put that number under the corresponding room. Fill in the contents of the box on the list until it is full. When you move to a new room, don’t start over at “Box 1” – keep the numbers going as you go from room to room so you don’t have duplicates, which could get confusing when you start to unpack everything.

Step 4: Label

Anything that is special should get an extra label, such as fragile items and essentials boxes. Make sure they are very clearly labeled and include that note in your inventory list, as well, so you can keep track of them.
